Papyrus - Decentralized Advertising Ecosystem

  • Papyrus is the world’s first fully comprehensive and highly scalable decentralized ecosystem for digital advertising which radically improves programmatic advertising stack to provide efficient, transparent and mutually beneficial environment for users, publishers, advertisers and decentralized application (dApp) developers using blockchain architecture.

    Papyrus Vision

    Blockchain technology is rapidly changing the way applications are built and function on the
    Internet. Its key advantages, decentralization and security, offer tremendous potential for
    reordering the Internet landscape. Advertising, the blood and fuel of the Internet economy,
    is on the verge of a blockchain revolution and we have a vision to disrupt the chaotic
    patterns and inefficiency of digital advertising by building a completely new advertising
    technology stack. Papyrus will be the future monetization vehicle of decentralized Internet
    applications and transform online advertising into a highly transparent, consistent and
    lucrative domain for all the participants in the advertising value chain.

    We believe disruption can be both a competitive advantage and inclusive. Our vision is to
    provide tools that enable seamless interconnectivity between decentralized applications
    and traditional advertising to make this transition both attractive and smooth for existing
    publishers and advertisers.

    We are a team of experts with strong backgrounds in building and scaling successful business
    processes in both advertising and blockchain technologies. We are challenging ourselves to
    realize the next breakthrough in AdTech space not only as entrepreneurs developing new
    technology and markets, but as pioneers of the new sharing economy who want to change
    the core relationship between advertisers and consumers from one of conflict, invasion and
    annoyance to an environment of partnership, transparency and profit sharing.

    Today, real time bidding (RTB) protocol is a common standard for online advertising. The
    Papyrus ecosystem will transform this to support decentralized applications and to radically
    improve the function of the existing programmatic advertising stack with better privacy and
    transparency using blockchain architecture.

    Papyrus will be an all-new global ecosystem committed to forward thinking technology
    and transparency in the form of a global decentralized autonomous organization (DAO)
    governed by token-holders and developed by the Papyrus Foundation. In this spirit, all
    Papyrus components and libraries will be open sourced.

    Papyrus tokens (PPR2) will become the basic tokens for decentralized Internet advertising.
    All payments, exchanges, incentives and fees on the Papyrus decentralized market for
    digital advertising will require PPR. The total supply of PPR tokens will be limited to the
    amount of tokens created during the initial PPR token sales described below.

    •  To build the world’s most efficient digital advertising ecosystem. Blockchain technology,

    decentralization and scalability solutions will enable Papyrus to:

    • Compensate users directly for voluntarily sharingtheir personal data;
    • Build a sophisticated value-based reputation system that significantly decreases the level of non-humantraffic and other types of fraud between participants
    • Minimize the risks for advertising businesses from excessive government regulation, criminal attacks and security breaches;
    • Increase the agility of all business processes by enforcing everything in real-time via blockchain smart contracts and state channels 3 to eliminate transactional bureaucracy, corresponding offline
    • Create an economy that incentivizes the developer community to produce more and more efficient applications that solve practical tasks in advertising;Dynamically balance the interests of users,

    • publishers, advertisers and developers for smooth, accelerated and economically viable progress towards new and more efficient advertising products.

    The Papyrus decentralized ecosystem for digital advertising is built on the basis of Ethereum blockchain and smart contracts with state channels and secure decentralized data storage to create a versatile and robust infrastructure that is reliable under a high ad transaction load.

    1. Ethereum. Papyrus is being built on top of the Ethereum network because it has proven live implementation, a strong team and a promising roadmap. The Hyped EOS project12 is also interesting, but it is very far from being production ready. In the upcoming Metropolis release of Ethereum, it will be possible to support anonymous transactions using zkSNARKs13. It is also reasonable to expect that Ethereum will successfully resolve the scalability issues. The aforementioned release will make it possible to perform private transactions using zkSNARKs to protect ad buying information from outsiders.

    2. State channels. Large ad networks and publishers generate hundreds of billions of ad clicks and at least two orders of magnitude more ad impressions annually. Any attempt to execute smart contracts, even for only a fraction of these transactions, will generate exorbitant gas costs. In its present state, this would surpass the bandwidth of the Ethereum network. A technology called state channels is being developed, however, that is capable of supporting these loads. There are already projects dedicated to using state channels for high-speed payments such as the Raiden Network14 and Lightning Network15. Papyrus will implement similar state channel protocols designed to accommodate real-time bidding (RTB) needs.

    3. Secure decentralized data storage. The permanent storage of 10 billion ad events within a blockchain, even assuming that each event would require only a very short record of 32 bytes of data, reach costs approaching 2.2 x 10-6 ETH (store operation gas cost) x 1010 x $200 (ETH price at the moment of publication) = >$4 million. It would be absurd to attempt to use blockchain for the storage of all advertising data. The use of secure decentralized storage such as Swarm16, IPFS17 with Filecoin18, or Storj19 with data history tamper proofing

    4. Blockchain identity and reputation management systems. By combining blockchain with identity verification, a digital ID can be created for ecosystem participants and function as digital watermark. Such an ID can be assigned to every smart contract transaction. Suitable identity verification protocols, for example the Civic20 project, which aims to tackle the problem of consumer identity theft and reduce online identity fraud, are already available. Papyrus participants will be able to remain anonymous or to provide their identity to gain trust from other participants and in turn generate various forms of revenue for actions. Identity management is to be supplemented with decentralized reputation management protocols capable of generating dynamic trust scores between parties. The Papyrus team will complete comparative research with different approaches to reputation management with the ultimate aim of establishing DAO governance and dispute resolution that will make the ecosystem resistant to unfair ratings, collusion, Sybil and other possible attacks. Decentralized identity and reputation management in Papyrus will be a key factor in minimizing fraud in digital advertising and significantly increasing ecosystem efficiency.

    The Papyrus ecosystem can be viewed as several distinct technological layers.

    • Layer 1 — Papyrus Core.

    The Core is the very basic layer of ecosystem governance which includes upgradeable Papyrus
    DAO, smart contracts to maintain registries of different ecosystem participants, contracts for
    identity management and decentralized RTB support. The Papyrus ecosystem will support a range
    of identity solutions when they become production-ready, including solutions such as Civic and
    uPort25. Papyrus DAO is responsible for:
    ▪ Ecosystem governance;
    ▪ Dispute resolution processes;
    ▪ Voting on upgrade proposals;
    ▪ Voting on fee limits in the ecosystem;
    ▪ Distribution of the Papyrus DAO token fund, including incentives
    and bounties for ecosystem participants;
    ▪ Crowdfunding escrow for ecosystem participants.

    • Layer 2 — Papyrus Scalability.

    This the Scalability layer includes technologies providing scalability and performance consistency
    necessary for Papyrus applications in real world programmatic advertising:
    ▪ dRTB Event Log Storage. Integration with secure, decentralized storage to store all
    RTB events and create transparency for all operations. Papyrus will allow integration
    with any suitable provider. Pilot projects with different providers to benchmark cost
    effectiveness, speed and reliability in real conditions will help determine which providers
    are most suitable. The liquidity of PPR tokens will be used to pay for necessary storage
    using token exchanges.
    ▪ dRTB State Channels Network. Implementation of state channel libraries in Papyrus
    will facilitate the opening and maintaining of a peer-to-peer state channels network.
    Leveraging the developments of Lightning Network and Raiden Network, the Papyrus
    ecosystem will introduce state channels adopted for usage in decentralized RTB
    ▪ Decentralized RTB (dRTB) protocol. The Papyrus ecosystem will introduce a dRTB
    protocol that will serve as an extension of the traditional OpenRTB protocol26 with
    antifraud mechanisms and state channels for immediate value exchange between
    ecosystem participants.

    • Layer 3 — Papyrus AdTech Infrastructure.

    The Papyrus AdTech Infrastructure layer includes all components required to establish a complete
    digital advertising cycle within the Papyrus ecosystem and to create gateways with traditional
    adtech systems.

    Papyrus will publish in open source:

    Papyrus iOS SDK, Android SDK and JS library that will

    ▪ encapsulate dRTB protocol logic;
    ▪ provide API for the integration of ad monetization models to dApps;
    ▪ provide API for user data sharing with DMPs;
    ▪ provide API for setting up and tuning data sharing policy,
    including balancing of data disclosure and appropriate user compensation;
    ▪ provide API for setting up and tuning advertising policy, including
    balancing of ads exposure and appropriate user compensation.
    The Papyrus ecosystem will constantly provide upgraded software to support new advertising models
    and formats inside dApps. In the alpha release, Papyrus will support simple banner integrations and
    later add other formats such as video and native ads. dApp developers will be free to use their own
    custom implementations and work with dRTB protocol directly.

    Papyrus dSSP (decentralized SSP). Decentralized SSP is software for network nodes that will be
    used by dApps to conduct real-time advertising biddings for ad interactions with users. dSSP can
    be a part of a dApp itself and perform client-side functions or it can be launched on different network
    nodes. dSSP is responsible for safeguarding publisher interests by managing ad compensation split
    between themselves and users. dRTB protocol specifies how compensation for all parties is negotiated
    and executed in real-time with decentralized security. A dSSP can store all transaction data in dRTB
    Event Log Storage for later analysis by publishers or audit providers in the event of dispute situations.

    Papyrus dDSP Gateway. Papyrus will create dDSP gateway software that will enable traditional
    DSPs to connect to the Papyrus ecosystem in a simple integration process and be able to use
    Papyrus resources for their ads in parallel with their traditional ad operations. To initiate bidding, a
    traditional DSP will need to buy PPR tokens for liquidity and to register as a dDSP in Papyrus registry

    Papyrus dSSP Gateway. Papyrus will create dSSP gateway software that will enable traditional
    SSPs and Ad Networks to connect to the Papyrus ecosystem in a simple integration process
    and obtain additional demand for their inventory. Traditional SSPs will receive PPR tokens for their
    traffic supply and will be able to convert them to other currencies as necessary.

    Papyrus Auditor. A critical component of the Papyrus ecosystem and the dRTB protocol is
    fraud prevention. To succeed in achieving unprecedented levels of transparency and security,
    the ecosystem will provide a special, new type of market participant — the auditor. Papyrus will
    develop open source basic implementation of auditor. Every Papyrus participant that qualifies
    with a sufficient volume of network resources to evaluate large amounts of traffic for fraud and
    other anomalies will be eligible to become an auditor. Such participants will need to make a
    significant security deposit in Papyrus DAO and register in the Audit Registry. Upon entering any
    negotiation, contracting dSSP and dDSP parities can make use of any registered auditor or even
    several auditors simultaneously to review dRTB transaction streams. Such auditors will operate as
    third party arbiters to decide whether to adjust transactions between users, publishers, dSSPs and
    dDSPs or not. As part of the process of analysis, auditors may provide participant rankings on the
    following parameters:
    ▪ What is the probability that a user is an unbiased human?
    ▪ What is the probability that a user has forged his data?
    ▪ What is the probability that a publisher will breach an advertiser’s
    brand security policy?
    ▪ What is the probability that an advertiser will breach a publisher’s advertising policy?
    ▪ What is the probability that an advertiser will breach a user’s advertising policy?
    Typically, transactions will be adjusted after a brief pause that allows auditors to gather behavioral
    data about participants to enable more precise ranking.
    Aggregated data on all transaction streams will be signed by all parties involved and filed in dRTB
    Event Log Storage to be used as a basis for Papyrus reputation management. Flexible reputation
    mechanisms will allow all ecosystem participants to make weighted decisions about bids while
    making transactions over dRTB. Should a participant demonstrate inappropriate behavior, such a
    participant will encounter scrutiny from potential partners and thus potentially receive less traffic
    and fewer bids. With such a setup, all participants become incentivized for appropriate behavior
    and will consequently enjoy greater efficiency of the marketplace.

    ▪Papyrus dDMP Gateway. By providing API to compensate users for sharing their data, Papyrus
    opens up a fair and transparent market for DMPs that gather, orient and actualize user data
    as a commodity that is processed and presented to data consumers such as dDSPs and which is
    monetized and capable of generating revenue. Papyrus will implement a dDMP Gateway library that
    utilizes protocols for compensated user data polling for subsequent analysis and can be integrated
    with traditional DMPs and simplify their integration inside Papyrus ecosystem.

    Layer 4 — Papyrus dApps.

    On the basis of the three layers of Papyrus architecture, developers will be able to build any kind of
    dApps with integrated advertising monetization economies for use within the ecosystem. All dApps
    integrated with Papyrus will constitute this final 4th layer.

    Papyrus itself will release a range of supplementary dApps for the ecosystem:

    * Papyrus Account Manager for users. This will be a place where users can:

    ▪ register their identity and receive a Papyrus ID;
    ▪ bind their cookies with Papyrus ID to receive payments for ads displayed via Papyrus
    on traditional websites and mobile apps via SSPs connected to Papyrus using the dSSP Gateway;
    ▪ configure a personalized advertising policy — what ads a user wants to see and with
    what compensation;
    ▪ configure a personalized data policy — what data a user is willing to share, with whom
    and with what compensation;
    ▪ display statistics for ad and data interactions and receive compensation;
    ▪ withdraw compensation after identity verification to prevent Sybil attacks.

    * Papyrus Account Manager for publishers. This will be a place where publishers can:

    ▪ register their identity on a publisher registry and receive a Papyrus ID;
    ▪ create advertising integrations for their dApp and receive appropriate codes
    to begin using them in the ecosystem;
    ▪ configure advertising policy for each integration — what ads a publisher is ready
    to display and with what compensation;
    ▪ configure schemes of compensation distribution with users;
    ▪ display statistics for ad interactions, received compensation and reputation;
    ▪ withdraw compensation after identity verification to prevent Sybil attacks.

    * Decentralized Affiliate Exchange. A decentralized affiliate exchange is an ideal project
    for the Papyrus ecosystem and the Papyrus team intends to develop it. An affiliate exchange will
    allow advertisers to simply post offers with clearly defined goals and expenditure limits and begin realizing
    them utilizing the power of the multitude of affiliate marketers.

    Here are some examples of other dApps that could be built on top of Papyrus project:

    ▪ dSSP Mediator — as Papyrus usage grows, the emergence of different dSSP solutions
    for Publishers is likely. It will be to the advantage of all participants to allow the mixed
    usage of multiple dSSPs to maximize revenue. dSSP mediation can be achieved either with
    a client-side approach or with the help of mediation network nodes;

    ▪ Affiliate Network Gateway — a dApp, which will aggregate ad offers from traditional
    affiliate networks and publish them on a decentralized affiliate exchange. The owners
    of such gateways could generate revenue ad offer fulfillment within the Papyrus ecosystem;
    ▪ Data Tracking and Analytics Provider — data is critical for making efficient advertising
    campaigns and for ensuring fairness of the network. Any solution that seeks to improve data
    metrics will be in high demand and could generate significant revenue.

    Papyrus will introduce its own ERC20-compliant liquidity token — PPR. The major use cases for the
    PPR token include:
    ▪ Advertiser payments within Papyrus for fulfillment of their directives will be obliged to
    be in PPR tokens distributed as fees for using ecosystem adtech infrastructure resources
    (affiliate marketers, dDSPs, dSSPs, dDMPs, auditors, etc), publisher resources and also
    user attention and response to ads;
    ▪ Payments from dDSP, auditors and other parties to data providers, including end-users
    for their data updates. Collected data will be used to improve audience targeting,
    perform anti-fraud analysis, enrich statistics for bidding, conduct market research, sell
    data products to external parties, etc;
    ▪ Security deposits for ecosystem participants which ensure their fair play and guard
    Papyrus against fraud;
    ▪ Governance of Papyrus DAO, voting for new core protocol upgrade proposals and
    smart contract upgrades, changes in basic fee limits, investments in new useful
    Papyrus dApp developments;
    ▪ Fees for dRTB Event Log Storage resources;
    ▪ Fees for Papyrus dispute resolution processes.

    The sale of PPR tokens is designed to realize the following goals:
    ▪ Fund Papyrus Foundation to support the development of the Papyrus ecosystem
    and its adoption as a viable digital ad marketplace;
    ▪ Attract individual experts and businesses from blockchain and adtech industries to
    participate in the development of Papyrus;
    ▪ Build a community of token-holders motivated to realize the success of Papyrus and
    which will in turn govern the Papyrus ecosystem on the basis of meritocracy;
    ▪ Incentivize the developer community to build new adtech dApps integrated with
    Papyrus to improve ecosystem efficiency and accelerate its growth;
    ▪ Create network effect value for Papyrus to achieve and maintain competitive advantage
    and to maintain its position as a market leader;
    ▪ Provide fair investment opportunity with significant ROI for supporters of the project.

    In line with these goals, PPR tokens will be the only instrument for payments, charging fees,
    reputation management and governance within Papyrus ecosystem. The total amount of issued
    tokens will be limited to an indefinite fixed volume of 1,000,000,000 (1 billion) units.
    Like other Ethereum-based tokens, PPR tokens will be subject to volatility depending on market
    conditions. Such volatility risks for ecosystem participants inside Papyrus will be mitigated in the
    following ways:

    ▪ The vast majority of payments will be made via high performance state channels and
    thus can be adjusted to market conditions in real-time;
    ▪ When parties begin transactions over state channels using PPR tokens, they will be
    able to negotiate and amend settlement contract obligations to adjust payments using
    current exchange rates of PPR to a basket of more stable tokens, for example tokens
    with fiat currency collateral such as Tether USD. Parties the ability to insert a formula
    of exchange rate calculation into the contract, which will then be used for settlement.
    Transacting parties can refer to specific oracles or decentralized token exchanges as
    source of exchange rate information, for example parties can agree to use the exchange
    rate of PPR to a weighted tokens basket averaged by specific oracle information in all
    blocks created in a blockchain between opening a state channel and its settlement.

    Token sale structure
    The following is a description of a preliminary PPR token sale structure. The structure is subject
    to change depending on conditions after the completion of all legal compliance procedures. There
    will be several token sale, the final conditions for each to be announced before their respective
    execution on the project official website34.
    Issued PPR tokens won’t be transferrable before phase 1 of the token sale ends. Tokens will become
    transferrable and thus available for exchange and use in the Papyrus ecosystem within 30 days
    following the completion of token sale phase 1.
    The smart contracts for token sales will undergo independent third party audits before launch to
    ensure the security and integrity of the code.
    The overall PPR token allocation will have the following configuration:

    ▪ 55% will be distributed in token sales:
    ▪ 35% in token sale phase 1, including coverage for pre-sale participants;
    ▪ 20% in token sale phase 2.
    ▪ 10% will be allocated to Papyrus DAO for decentralized management after its
    deployment. These tokens will be used by the DAO to incentivize ecosystem participants,
    fund new proposals and their development.
    ▪ 10% will be put under the management of the Papyrus Foundation. These tokens will
    act as a surety for the long-term incentive of the Foundation to support ecosystem
    development. They may be used for different purposes, including funding research
    and development as well as promotional packages for business partnerships and
    ecosystem adoption on the digital advertising market.
    ▪ 10% will be reserved for the project founding team. These tokens will be locked for 12
    months after token sale phase 1 with a 6 months cliff. They are intended to function as
    an incentive for the team to continuously drive ecosystem development and adoption.
    ▪ 15% will be used as network growth fund for bounty campaigns, marketing activities,
    incentives for advisory board and project partnerships. They will be used to boost
    expert community support of the Papyrus ecosystem worldwide.

    Token Pre-Sale

    The goal of the pre-sale is to measure market demand for the ecosystem, attract early stage venture
    backers to the Papyrus project, generate initial funding to start agile team scaling and to accelerate
    the development and creation of an expert community around the project.
    We are considering using Gnosis-style reverse Dutch token auction as a market based approach
    for determining fair value for PPR tokens. As Ethereum and Bitcoin Magazine Co-founder Vitalik
    Buterin35 has suggested in a recent post, most token sales drawbacks can be offset by utilizing a
    sequence of Gnosis-style auctions until the entire allocated token supply is distributed36.
    To perform pre-sale in this spirit we will create special tokens for pre-sale participants, called PRP
    (pre-Papyrus). PRP tokens will be issued only once to conclude pre-sale and their amount will be
    limited to a fixed volume of 50,000,000 (fifty million) units. Each PRP token holder is granted to
    receive PPR tokens in exchange to his/her PRP tokens using conversion ratio, determined as:

    VPPR = VPRP * (PPRP / PPPR ) * 150%
    Where VPPR — the amount of PPR tokens that PRP token holder will receive in a result of PPR
    token sale phase 1 in exchange to their PRP tokens, VPRP — the amount of PRP tokens that token
    holder have, which are exchanged, PPRP — price of PRP tokens denominated in USD and determined
    as a result of the PRP pre-sale auction in the day it ends (this price will be published by Papyrus
    team on the official website and in blog posts), PPRP — price of PPR tokens denominated in USD
    and determined as a result of PPR token sale phase 1 auction in the day it ends (this price will be
    published by Papyrus team on the official website and in blog posts). We will determine tokens USD
    price using their ETH price determined in the auction and weighted 24h USD-price of ETH on one

    of the top crypto exchanges (we will publish details of this process on the official website and in
    blog posts).
    Thus participants of pre-sale get strong incentive to participate as they eventually get 50% more
    PPR tokens than token sale phase 1 auction participants for the same USD volume.
    PRP tokens won’t be transferrable. After PPR token sale phase 1 ends and PRP holders receive
    appropriate PPR tokens amount in exchange to PRP, all PRP tokens will be burned.
    All 100% of issued PRP tokens will be allocated for pre-sale process, including bounty and incentives
    for partners. The token pre-sale will have private and public components. Private part participants
    will be granted additional bonus tokens for their early participation with high volume. Pre-sale
    is planned to be concluded in the august-september of 2017. The dates, detailed policy and the
    complete description of the scheme for the token pre-sale will be announced on the official Papyrus
    website at least 7 days before its launch.

    Approximate pre-sale budget allocation:
    ▪ 50% will be invested in Papyrus ecosystem marketing and promotion, hiring business
    developers and community managers in different regions around the globe, as well
    as in building relationships with expert advisors and companies from the adtech and
    blockchain industries, including making prototype integrations with ad networks, DSPs
    and ad agencies.
    ▪ 25% will be invested in research and development, including hiring of new development
    team employees.
    ▪ 5% will be reserved to cover infrastructure costs, such as hardware and office expenses.
    ▪ 5% will be reserved for legal costs and counsel.
    ▪ 15% will be reserved for early project supporters and project founding team.

    Token Sale Phase 1.

    The goal of token sale phase 1 is to obtain substantial funding for Papyrus ecosystem development
    and adoption in coming years and attract a diversity of token-holders worldwide to establish broadminded
    token-based governance within the Papyrus ecosystem.
    The token sale phase 1 will not take place before Papyrus make prototype demonstration, including
    dSSP and dDSP.
    The token sale phase 1 will be publicly announced on the official Papyrus website at least 14 days
    in advance. It is expected to that phase 1 will be complete by the end of 2017. The dates, policy and
    the scheme description for token sale phase 1 will be announced on the official Papyrus website.
    The amount of tokens distributed in token sale phase 1 will be 35% of the overall PPR tokens volume.
    This amount will also cover conversion of PRP tokens for pre-sale participants. Distribution of PPR
    tokens will be made to PRP token holders and to token sale phase 1 participants simultaneously.
    Should the token sale phase 1 cap be reached before the allocated volume of tokens are completelydistributed, then an additional token sale for the remaining undistributed PPR tokens will be scheduled in a few months thereafter. Token sale will continue to be scheduled until all tokens

    allocated for token sale phase 1 are distributed.

    Approximate Phase 1 budget allocation:
    ▪ 40% will be invested in Papyrus ecosystem worldwide marketing and promotion,
    including funding for growth of marketing and business development teams in different
    countries, integrations with partners in adtech and blockchain industries to accelerate
    Papyrus supply-side and demand-side volumes growth.
    ▪ 20% will be invested in research and development, including significant scaling of the
    technical team to accelerate Papyrus development.
    ▪ 20% will be invested in most prominent teams and projects in blockchain and adtech
    areas which can benefit Papyrus ecosystem.
    ▪ 5% will be reserved to cover infrastructure, legal and office expenses.
    ▪ 15% will be reserved for early project supporters and project founding team.
    It will be assumed that in the event of success, the phase 1 budget will be sufficient to sustain the
    Papyrus project development until at least 2023.

    Token Sale Phase 2.

    TThe goal of token sale phase 2 will be to provide large advertising companies an easy means to
    acquire large shares of PPR tokens with a measure of security against causing market volatility and
    to engage them as participants in growing the Papyrus ecosystem. To accomplish this goal, token
    sale phase 2 will be private and participants will need to obtain accreditation to participate.
    The token sale phase 2 will not take place until 2019 and will be publicly announced on the official
    Papyrus website at least 2 months in advance. The amount of tokens distributed in token sale phase
    2 will be approximately 20% of overall token volume.
    The precise token sale Phase 2 budget allocation will be specified before its launch

  • Papyrus - Technical Roundup #2

    This week our team continued working on the first prototype of Papyrus product (see the scope outlined in our previous roundup). Since enabling transparency is the key goal of the new ecosystem we are building, we take it seriously as a team — and following our promises we’ve just made our repositories public! You can now check the code and docs on GitHub, the key highlights include:

    1. Basic Papyrus DAO with participants registration logic, which is detached from the actual data (registries) and can be upgraded separately.
    2. Registries for ecosystem participants, with reputation tracking logic to be used when settling the payment channels and receiving fraud reports from the Auditors.
    3. Payment channel implementation comprised of smart contracts anchoring the channel on the blockchain, and channel node logic performing actual off-chain payments exchange — now with basic conditional transactions!
    4. Initial version of gateways to connect traditional SSPs and DSPs.

    · The contracts for Papyrus tokens and wallet to support the Token Generation Event (which will be announced soon!)

    Some details on the proposed Papyrus architecture, including our vision on Auditors involvement and reputation tracking.

    And now we focus on:

    1. Elaboration of SSP/DSP gateway logic, and integration of payment channels into bidding process.
    2. Finalizing conditional transactions support and overall payment channels testing.
    3. Integration with Auditors to unlock conditional transactions.
    4. Triggering reputation updates for SSPs and DSPs.

    Papyrus will bring benefits to all the fair players along the advertising chain — but interaction between DSPs and SSPs with transparency enforced by Auditors’ participation is at the very core of the ecosystem. That’s why a major focus is on SSP and DSP gateways, and Auditor integration — once this is done we are going to connect our first partners!

  • Papyrus Technical Roundup #4

    So, another week has passed since our last update — and we are less than a week away from the Token Generation Event Round 1. But even before we get there an important milestone will be passed — this weekend we are going to deploy our prototype contracts to the Ethereum mainnet! This will allow registration of the prototype ecosystem participants (once the prototype tokens are issued), and will enable us to start actual deployment of integrations with our first partners. In anticipation of that we worked on:

    · Making our last refinements in the prototype DAO and registries.

    · Further strengthening payment channels implementation and improving reliability of persistence logic.

    · And further improving the prototype core SSP/DSP gateways.

    Once we deploy the contracts, we are going to register test SSP, DSP and Auditor accounts — and run test transactions across the actual working instances of the prototype core. Stay with us and watch for updates!

  • Papyrus - Latest news on the platform development

    At the moment we are working on a new specification for the Papyrus prototype.

    Here’s the details:     — DSP has demonstrated the ability to create campaigns through smart contracts;  — We setup a scanner for our blockchain for advertisers for reviewing impressions purchase chains;   — And we are working to bring large supply partners to the platform.

    This week Alex Shvets, our Product Director gave a talk on “The use of blockchain in RTB. How to scale a decentralised database to handle and save hundreds of thousands of impressions per second” at HighLoad++ 2017. Alex discussed the options for scaling blockchain and how to store terabytes of data with the help of a blockchain. He also provided a practical application which was the addition of a blockchain in an RTB ecosystem.    In a meanwhile look through the recent article by Digitalist (SAP magazine on Cloud, Mobile, Big Data & Analytics) about Papyrus and learn how we change programmatic advertising.    Thanks for reading and stay tuned!

  • Papyrus Technical Roundup #7

    During the last few recent weeks our team has been actively developing ourthe product and is almost ready to launch the first real ad purchase through the Papyrus ecosystem.

    We are now testing and improving the beta version of the Papyrus node. The Papyrus node is a set of components developed by our team that is responsible for interacting with the blockchain and providing a gRPC API. All existing software vendors such as DSP, SSP and auditors can interact with ecosystem through this API. In the development of the Papyrus node, our team was able to solve the very difficult issues of highload and scaling.

    One of the important tasks solved by the Papyrus node is storing, retrieving, and exchanging data. We have already implemented a local file protocol and begin to test the interaction via IPFS.

    A great use of the Papyrus node is in performing validation and the formation of the Papyrus blockchain blocks. Any participant in the chain, including the advertiser and the publisher, can setup the Papyrus node in order to validate the data.

    It is with great pride I can say that our team has developed a whole framework for processing blocks that can be used even outside the advertising ecosystem.

    In the near future we plan to open the source code of the Papyrus node and provide instructions for deployment on any server.

    In order to show the capabilities of Papyrus, we made a small demonstration DSP, which allows you to purchase traffic through the Papyrus ecosystem.

    In this DSP you can already create advertising campaigns. To check the correctness of DSP campaign statistics you can in separate amazing software called Papyrus scanner, which we will release in the very soon. The Papyrus scanner is a kind of Etherscanner for the Papyrus blockchain that will allow any member of the ecosystem to check its purchase chains.

    Recently we have been actively working on the SSP Gateway, which will allow purchasing inventory from publishers that are not yet fully integrated into the Papyrus ecosystem. We have achieved a lot of success so far, taking into account the support of several RTB protocols.

    We are getting very close to the launch of advertising sales through Papyrus!
