  • The Stratis Roadmap 2016-2017

  • How to securely hold STRAT - Stratis Weekly

Cryptocurrencies are truly liberating – never before have individuals
been able to take charge of their funds, independent of any financial
institution. But if you are going to be your own bank you must also be
your own security guard. At Stratis we have a set of best practices to
help you safeguard your tokens. With these few simple steps you can
enjoy all the benefits Stratis has to offer without any negative side
    effects.

Improving the security of your Stratis account relies on one basic
principle – the more layers of security you can put between yourself and
    a potential hacker the better.

Ways to keep your wallet safe

    1. Keep your tokens offline (known as ‘cold storage’) either on your
hard drive, on an external hard drive or send to Stratis Wallet on your
      computer for staking.
    2. Don’t forget to backup your wallet. Go to FILE > BACKUP WALLET.
Best practice is to do this frequently onto several new or freshly
      formatted usb hard drives.
    3. Lock down your password. Good password security is essential in the
cryptocurrency community – a long password with a mixture of numbers,
letters and symbols is best and changing your passwords often can help
      security.
    4. Encrypt your Stratis wallet by going to SETTING > ENCRYPT wallet.
    5. Update your software to the latest version of the client. Get notified of updates by joining us on our Slack channel, Bitcointalk thread, or follow us on Twitter @stratisplatform
    6. Ensure your malware software is running full scans on a regular basis and is up to date.
    7. Most important: Write down or otherwise make sure you will always
remember your password every time you change it. Most loses occur when
people lock themselves out of their wallets.

    Take Care Online

If you must keep tokens online – a popular practice is to only keep
only small amounts of currency there for daily use. You should always
use 2FA with online accounts and where possible, set up security alerts
so that you can keep tabs on all login activity.

Did you know that most security breaches lie with human error?
Vigilance is key. Be careful in forums to avoid revealing your identity
together with your Stratis Address, use only trusted computers – no
internet cafes or ‘family’ computers – and check your internet
    connection is secure.

    Stratis is Designed for Security

We are working hard in the background to keep the entire Stratis
platform as secure as possible. Let’s take a deeper look at what we are
doing and how that works in our interests.

Stratis preserves the trusted, secure architecture of Bitcoin – by
that we mean the ability to create a tamper-proof record of transactions
by securing them cryptographically. This means that information can be
committed to the Stratis blockchain with confidence. How we differ from
Bitcoin is in the way in which we secure that information.

Bitcoin is 100% proof of work
    (POW)
meaning miners carry out complex computations in order to write
data to the blockchain, and generate new coins as a reward for doing so.
However, Stratis has moved to 100% Proof of Stake
    (POS)
whereby Stratis holders secure the Blockchain by holding tokens
in their wallets, allowing them to mature (no transactions in 24 hours),
and leaving the wallets open. Investors who ’stake’ their tokens in
such a way can earn Stratis in reward – a bit like earning interest on
their holdings. POS is fairer for all and several thousand times more
cost effective than POW. It doesn’t require any mining equipment so it
isn’t subject to spiraling running costs and mining centralisation.

Help the overall network security and start staking your tokens
today. We are pleased to see that 50% of Stratis holders are already
    doing this
    – an unusually high number of investors! If you would like to
join them and earn a little Stratis in the process, all the information
you need to started can be found here.

  • Stratis in Numbers (Stratis Weekly)

Greetings and welcome to our fourth edition of the Stratis weekly newsletter. This week we have responded to a slack conversation in which some of our community members
were discussing how to help with Twitter promotion. In response we have come up with a smart little infographic that we hoped would give you insight into some of our stats
though – we are pleased to report that two of our core team members went along to the Blockchain Money Conference in London at the weekend –scroll down to read their highlights from the event.

Notes from the Blockchain Money Conference

Stratis were out and about at the Blockchain Money conference in London on Sunday 6th and Monday 7th November. The conference was held at Bishopsgate and Stratis Dev Dan Gershony was joined by PR and content manager Freya Stevens. The program included the likes of John McAfee, Roger Ver (Blockchain Ultimate) and Nic Cary (Blockchain.info)

    Freya
The conference kicked off with Marieke Flament, Managing Director of Circle, describing internet has fundamentally changed many industries since it’s inception such as the travel and music industries, but for some reason banking still resists. The Bitcoin and Banking panel went into more detail about where the utility of blockchain technology could be within the finance industry but couldn’t agree on the extent of its potential. Professor Ferdinando Ametrano was of the opinion that blockchain was just another hype word and explained that smart contracts were not needed where nano-second trading was already taking place. ‘We don’t need the DAO – we have people’ he declared, and the subtleties of trade finance would not be solved with blockchain. Instead he argued for applied cryptography or ‘a database on steroids’.

Anthony Macey (Barclays) strongly disagreed arguing that blockchain technology had enabled him to reduce settlement flows down from 14 days to under 4 hours which represented a seismic shift for the industry. Chris Ballinger (Toyota) also took sides adding that at the moment ‘It’s probably faster to mail bills than to use the current attempts to digitise financial settlements’. He then returned the discussion back to where he saw the opportunity of blockchain technologies.

Cryptocurrencies turn every instrument into a ‘bearer’ instrument – whether financial, physical or intellectual property – all can become bearer instruments thus solving the trust problem – that is the real value in the system’

    Dan
For me John McAfee’s talk was really interesting. He spoke about the spread of keylogger software used to spy on wallet keys during signup. He talked about the need to use harware wallets and of his conviction that there will never be a software wallet that is secure so long as mobile exists. Outside in the foyer I chatted to Paul Puey, CEO of Airbitz wallet who said they were working on delivering edge encryption to everything on their platform which is definitely a way forward!

Something else John McAfee said was intriguing – he has set up a mining business in the US on his conviction that ‘cryptocurrencies are here to stay for good or for bad, nothing can top that now, not even governments’. This sentiment was echoed by political representatives on the European Government and Blockchain panel. EU parliament member Eva Kaili said that there would be voting on a new raft of regulation within the next few months but since the technology is still in a state of development they will be cautious to take any tough measures, and they will certainly not be classing cryptocurrencies as money any time soon. Overall the message I got from the political establishment is one of gradual acceptance.

I also noticed the theme that blockchain is being applied to other use cases beyond finance. Michael Mainelli from Y/Zen took a quick tour of its use in Geostamping, Clinical Trials and Supply Chains – anywhere that a central 3rd party situation can be found. Blockchain he said, has the potential to reduce natural monopolies thereby reducing a raft of vulnerabilities like switching costs and sloth. All in all though, it’s exciting times for blockchain.

That’s all for now but look out for next weeks issue where we will dive into the C#.NET protocol.
    Wishing you a Trumptastic day!

  • The Most Important Thing You Should Do Right Now (Stratis Weekly #5)

    Welcome Stratisans!

I have a strategic goal with this issue of the weekly, which is that by the time you have finished reading this, you will have UPDATED YOUR STRATIS WALLET TO v2.0.0.

The wallet update is MANDATORY across ALL Operating Systems. The deadline for this is Saturday 19th November at 00:00:00 GMT! You MUST update your wallet here to v2.0.0 before the deadline. We don’t want to leave anyone behind so please do it now. Right, onwards.

    Dev Update

This week we have reached a major milestone on our development calendar. The .NET core scheduled for Feb 2017 is now complete, and it’s only November! We are thrilled to be running ahead of schedule and in case you missed previous updates, due to hiding under rocks and so forth, the full node OSX competition is over and @dev0tion is successfully running it on OSX. We are now working hard on porting POSv3 to C# so we are hoping to bring you more exciting news on that really soon.

    Why Stratis is Unique?

As you know our aim is to bring blockchain technology to you in C# .NET. but what you may not know is why it is an incredibly useful and important thing to do. We have decided to give you a little insight into what it is about Stratis that gets us out of bed in the mornings.

The open source community may not have had much time for Microsoft’s closed systems in the past, but times are changing. Did you know .NET is now open source? Microsoft are getting up to speed and this presents a great opportunity for Stratis. We want to introduce blockchain to the huge community of developers working in C#.NET who no doubt work across a wide range of industries – C#.NET is a very popular language among the business community! By tapping into the potential of this community, Stratis hopes to accelerate uptake of the technology and popularise the development of new apps and services (on the Stratis blockchain of course).

You may be surprised to know that C#.NET now has the following capabilities:

    • You can write C# in any editor you want
    • C# runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux
    • C# has expanded to develop native iOS and Android apps (within 3rd party framework Xamarin)
    • C# can also be used to build back-end and middle-tier frameworks and libraries.
    • The latest version of C# is 7.0 which comes with new features such as including tuples, record types and pattern matching.

Now for those of you who are wondering what the .NET bit is:

    • .NET is the compiler platform that enables building code analysis tools with the same API’s that are used in visual studio.
    • .NET supports all IDE’s and editors, linters and analysis tools, fixing and refactoring and code generation tools and all the scripting and REPLs.

Have we converted you? Don’t forget that C# is still a young and impressionable language and new features are being decided by the community. The future looks bright for Stratis – here’s what our Dev Sigwo has to say on the matter:

‘The potential in Stratis is the ability for developers to code against a C# daemon to host their own private chains and Stratis has a great team to work with. Having a veteran bitcoin developer start the NStratis code puts Stratis in a different category of seriousness.’

    Delayed Rewards for Staking

Some of you may have noticed that staking has not been rewarding you as expected this week. This is because the Stratis team have been controlling the staking and will continue to do so until Saturday 19th November. Be assured rewards are still being accrued for POS work being done this week and you will receive these after Saturday. Have you read this far and still not updated your wallet? Do it now.

And last, but certainly not least! – we want to give a special shout out to @Snip has developed a new web-app called StratisRate.com. It is surely the best resource around for checking in on $STRAT. Just some of the functions: Real-time rates for $STRAT in EUR, USD & BTC, 5 second refresh & desktop notifications. Great work @Snip!

    More excellent news coming soon,
    Stay Tuned.

  • Start Coding Blockchain Apps Natively in C# and .Net with Stratis

Stratis Announces Release of the nStratis Development Framework

We are thrilled to announce that today Stratis launches the much anticipated nStratis Development Framework (SDF) – enabling blockchain development in C# and .NET.

SDF marks a major milestone accomplished by the Stratis development team that will allow support for accelerated development of powerful, open source, cross-platform blockchain applications on Microsoft’s .net framework. Following a successful crowdfund earlier this year, Stratis has gone from strength to strength, releasing its Blockchain Development Framework well ahead of an original target date in early 2017.

We are inviting developers to start coding and testing the capabilities of our open source SDF that can be found at: https://github.com/stratisproject/NStratis.

The contributions of Nicolas Dorier to NBitcoin, have been instrumental in bringing the SDF to life and we would like to take a moment to thank him for his tireless work on this. For those of you wishing to start work on the SDF right away we recommend reading this documentation on nBitcoin: [https://programmingblockchain.gitbooks.io/programmingblockchain/content/] It is Bitcoin specific but there are many similarities with Stratis. We are, of course. working on Stratis specific documentation and will get that to you as soon as it is ready for distribution.

‘The work required for the creation of our Stratis #C full node involves two major tasks: a complete rewrite of POS in C# and the refactoring required, also the forking of nBitcoin to support the Stratis blockchain and its many diversions from Bitcoin. Today we are proud to announce that we have completed the latter, thanks to the invaluable dedication of our top developers Nicolas Dorier and Dan Gershony, whose technical expertise has made this possible well before the Dec-Jan goals set in our road map” Chris Trew, Stratis CEO.

Our initial release provides a blockchain development toolkit for developers, such as an API and a TransactionBuilder that supports all the standard transactions, such as record keeping on the Stratis blockchain, timestamping and proof of existence.

    List of Features

    Full script evaluation and parsing

  • Stratis Roadmap Update

From the first moment we presented Stratis to the world, we knew how important it would be to operate on a planned and verifiable schedule. Working according to schedule and budget is the key to survival in the corporate world! With that in mind we would like to present the Stratis community with an updated version of our development roadmap. The revisions are based on our current status and the tasks we have accomplished or that remain to be accomplished. Why do that? The dynamic of the development process has shown that in practice there were some areas we could advance faster, and in fact we did – going well into the 2017 tasks. Some of those tasks that we have completed include:
    Stratis Development Framework (SDF)
SDF .NET Core Native Cross platform Support.
    SDF NuGet Package
Stratis Bitcoin Full node Consensus layer and Initial Blockchain Download (IBD) stratis-future.
Stratis Bitcoin Full node DBreeze integration for storing the blockchain.
Stratis Bitcoin Full node .NET Core support. At the same time this dynamic has also shown us that we need more time to solve some specific tasks in certain areas, or put together additional pieces that guarantee a better experience and results from our deliverables. Therefore, you will notice that some tasks we have been discussing lately like the “Stratis Cloud Beta” have been moved to later dates. In the case of “Stratis Cloud Beta”while well advanced in development, it is felt that the proposed interface and overall user experience does not meet our high standards. Additionally, we would like more time to create sufficient documentation to ensure that user get the most out of the platform. Similarly, other tasks related to Stratis Academy will require some additional time to get started as we put together all the pieces of this ambitious project. We want to thank you again for your patience and support and reiterate our commitment to quality and excellence. We assure you your patience will be rewarded with the delivery of outstanding products that will make us all proud to be part of the Stratis project.

    Stratis NuGet Package released

We have just released the Stratis NuGet package. This represents the integration of Stratis to Microsoft’s Visual Studio, which offers a near complete rewrite of all the functionality in Bitcoin Core. This is a huge step to put our tools in the hands of C# / .net developers and it’s available from this link: https://www.nuget.org/packages/nStratis/.

  • Anonymous Transactions Coming to Stratis

Nicolas Dorier the developer of NBitcoin and consultant to the Stratis project has announced the NTumbleBit project, a server and client implementation of the TumbleBit payment scheme in C#.TumbleBit, is a new anonymous payment protocol that aims to solve two of the major challenges faced by Bitcoin, scaling Bitcoin to keep up with the increasing demand, and protecting the privacy of payments made via Bitcoin.TumbleBit is implemented as a layer built on top of Bitcoin and is compatible without requiring changes to the existing Bitcoin protocol. TumbleBit payments are processed off the blockchain, this is how it helps Bitcoin scale. These off chain transactions are unlinkable, as volume increases we expect TumbleBit to offer a new level in anonymous payments. The TumbleBit payment scheme does not require the user to trust the TumbleBit server, at no time can the TumbleBit server link the users transactions or steal their bitcoin.

    The TumbleBit whitepaper states,

“To deliver on this promise, anonymity must also be provided in the face of the anonymity-enhancing service itself—if the service knows exactly which payer is paying which payee, then a compromise of the service leads to a total loss of anonymity. Compromise of anonymity-enhancing technologies is not unknown. In 2016, for example, researchers found more than 100 Tor nodes snooping on their user.”

TumbleBits payments aim to address the Bitcoin scalability issue by processing all transactions off the bitcoin blockchain. By utilizing off chain transactions the service removes the 10-minute delay associated with waiting for traditional Bitcoin confirmation times. By utilizing the TumbleBit payment scheme all transactions will be completed in mere seconds.

    NTumbleBit

In order for TumbleBit to function the Tumbler Hub has to put many bitcoins into escrow. If it cannot, some people will not be able to use it. Therefore the growing of TumbleBit is actually a direct Bitcoin buying pressure.

    A quote from Nicolas Dorier:

“NTumbleBit will be a cross-platform framework, server and client for the TumblerBit payment scheme. TumbleBit is separated into two modes, tumbler mode and payment hub mode. The tumbler mode improves transaction fungibility and offers risk free unlinkable transactions. Payment hub mode is a way of making offchain payments possible without requiring implementations like Segwit or the lightning network.I decided to work urgently on NTumbleBit, as I don’t see any exit to the situation we are in regarding Bitcoin scaling.TumbleBit will be, I think, the first off chain payment system reaching mainstream”

NTumbleBit will be forked by Stratis development for the Stratis blockchain and will also be available on Stratis Private Chains. The NTumbleBit implemention on Private chains will be utilized to provide greater scalability for corporations that require higher transaction volumes. The Stratis parent chain will be utilized for the anonymity functionality available from NTumbleBit.The Stratis project is exploring the possibility of offering a centralized NTumbleBit service for Bitcoin, but a service of this nature represents several legal hurdles. Its certainly on our roadmap and we will update the community accordingly.Because NTumbleBit is developed in C# utilizing NBitcoin (the base framework that was utilized in our SDF) our in house team and also our community of developers will be able to implement and make changes to the NTumbleBit payment scheme. We expect to see some innovative use cases conceptualized for this technology.

  • STRATIS Developers Update

Our developers have been working so hard and so fast on the nStratis project that it’s often difficult to keep on top of the latest news, so
this week we have made a special effort to bring you a snapshot of what is happening under the hood of nStratis, right now.

    Visual block explorer

Great news – our visual block explorer is within reach. Just two
tasks stand between us and having a simple user interface that will
enable users/corporations to interrogate the Stratis blockchain: 1, fork
the Azure blockchain indexer and 2, see to QbitNinja. Once completed,
we will have an official visual block explorer and API that should be
able to support up to 20,000 requests per second!

Full Node Update from Nicolas Dorier

For Stratis full node, the consensus code is done. There
are two further things that need to be done that I will focus on:
downloading from the network – not from a single node peer, and the RPC
Server. I’ve worked quite a lots with ASP.NET core on TumbleBit, so it should be easy.

For NTumbleBit: I coded all the logic for puzzle promise and puzzle
solver. What is needed now is to do the TumblerServer. This is well on
the way and I don’t expect much difficulty in getting it finished.

You can read more about The NTumbleBit project in our recent blog post ‘Anonymous Transactions Coming to Stratis’ that can be found here.
In a nutshell, TumbleBit is a new anonymous payment protocol that aims
to solve two of the major challenges faced by Bitcoin, scaling Bitcoin
to keep up with the increasing demand, and protecting the privacy of
payments made via Bitcoin. According to Nicholas TumbleBit will likely
be the first off-chain payment system to reach mainstream adoption. We
are pleased therefore to be making steps towards adopting this
    technology into nStratis.

    nStratis is Hackathon-ready

We are happy to report that nStratis is now in a ready state for the
hackathon. The consensus code for Stratis’ full node is complete and has
passed it’s checks. nStratis also supports netstandard (for netcore and
cross platform) and has a published and ready to use nuget package. We
are using the nStratis nuget package with the netcore project [name of
the Minter] to download the blockchain and will be using it to build and
broadcast POS blocks to the network.

    NBitcoin Update from Nicolas Dorier

Regarding NBitcoin: I’ve just removed dependency to
System.Numerics and allowed compilation without Newtonsoft. This
basically means that it now theoretically works on Unity. I also coded a
bunch of JsonConverter out of the box for serializing to Json – the
most commonly used class in NBitcoin.

    Electrum Stratis Wallet
The new Electrum Stratis Wallet is a fact! You can download it here.

With the new wallet you don’t have to download the blockchain anymore to use it. It also has an HD (Hierarchical Deterministic) wallet feature. This means that by remembering 12 words you can get access to your wallet anywhere you want. It will generate your addresses and private keys from those 12 words. So needless to say those 12 words should be 12 words not to forget. The Electrum Stratis Wallet is fast, secure and easy to use. The wallet can be used on the desktop or with the command line interface. It also will support the Ledger Wallet feature after they have released their new firmware.

    nStratis and Stratis Cloud
These projects are still being developed and soon to be publicly released on the testnet. We are happy to report that our Stratis full node is currently running over actual bitcoin nodes, which is a huge step on that direction. Additionally, we are giving the final touches to the UI for our Stratis Cloud. We will inform of additional progress, but we expect those to be concluded by the time we start making public presentations planned for 2017.

    The Road Ahead (2017)

Our marketing efforts will kick off early in 2017. Only for the 1st Q 2017 we are already booked for participation in major blockchain events in three continents:

    1. Blockchain Expo London Expo (London, UK)
    2. The Blockchain Event (Fort Lauderdale, USA)
    3. C# Corner Annual Conference (Ghaziabad, India)

This events also cement our expansion into markets in the Americas and India, through solid partnerships and regional presence. At the C# Corner event (the largest C# developers community in the world, 2+ mill members) we will have a keynote presentation and will organize a hackathon for developers to get hands on the Stratis development tools.

In 2017, we expect to develop strong bonds with C# / .net developers. We will be launching our Stratis Academy training program, as well as identifying MVPs and Ambassadors candidates all of which will help put Stratis in front of corporate decision makers through their IT departments. We will be also holding several hackathons and competitions, so stay tuned to the opportunities.

We will be making a major marketing push with advertising on the most popular blockchain related websites and publications properties, as well as on C# Corner and some of their affiliate publications for C#/.net developers.

We are working to implement the Unity/Stratis integration based in the latest achievements from Nicolas Dorier, an integration that would open the possibility of Stratis platform being used for in-game asset creation and development of in-game economies with Stratis at the center. We are actively seeking for developers and partners to assist with this major project, and have received multiple applications which we are in the process of reviewing.

Last but not least we are looking into our next steps for the future of Stratis, such as the Stratis Assets & Crowdfunding Platform and the Stratis Dapps Marketplace. All these initiatives guarantee we will stay competitive and secure our spot among the top cryptocurrency projects of all times. As you can see the future ahead of us is bright. Thanks for coming along with us in this journey!

  • Stratis Platform Showcased At The Blockchain Expo in London, U.K.

Press Release: LONDON, Jan .23, 2017 / (Stratis Comms)

This coming week, companies and developers attending the Blockchain Expo in London, U.K. (Jan 23-24, 2017) will have the opportunity to learn how to develop, test and deploy decentralized blockchain apps using the Stratis Platform.

The team behind the Stratis Platform will be presenting their breakthrough development: a proven, secure and scalable end-to-end solution for C# / .Net decentralized blockchain applications.

Dubbed as the “Blockchain for Business” company, Stratis promises to accelerate and make more efficient the process of blockchain development and deployment by offering:

    • Seamless development, integration and distribution of blockchain solutions on Microsoft’s .Net framework
    • Fully certified, proven and security compliant data management
    • Rapid acceleration for your blockchain project development
    • One-click provisioning of blockchain solutions on Azure BaaS and Cloud Stratis
    • Professional support throughout the development process

In the words of Chris Trew, CEO and Founder of Stratis Ltd:

“The Stratis Platform marks the next step in the evolution of Bitcoin, by facilitating adoption among C# and .Net developers, while integrating  the latest technological improvements to the original Bitcoin protocol.

Stratis blockchain solutions combine the robustness of the Bitcoin consensus model with a set of familiar tools, programming languages and business infrastructure used by large and medium sized companies worldwide.

Based on an original rewrite of the Bitcoin protocol in C# (NBitcoin), by famed Bitcoin core developer Nicolas Dorier, the nStratis Development Framework (SDF) allows companies to easily develop, test and deploy blockchain applications without the hassle of maintaining a complex infrastructure or having to learn complex programming languages used in other solutions.

To facilitate testing and deployment, Stratis offers the option of one-click provisioning of blockchains, sidechains and private blockchain projects. Earlier last year, the company announced the deployment of Stratis solutions on Microsoft’s Azure Blockchain as a Service (BaaS). In addition, the company offers its own Blockchain hosting solution – Cloud Stratis, which is specifically suited for customized projects including private and side blockchains.

Stratis solutions can be applied to solving the most daring challenges in the online world nowadays, such as establishing and protecting Internet identity and trust among parties, maintaining immutable ledgers and in IoT solutions that require a reliable and low cost system for reporting and processing of micro-payments. Additionally, the platform can be used to create and manage all type of assets, support crowfunding campaigns and promotions.

The Stratis Platform also includes a publicly traded token $STRAT, which is the result of a full rewrite in C# of Bitcoin’s proven architecture and consensus mechanism. It was one of the best performers among cryptocurrencies in 2016 in terms of financial returns to its holders.

To assist development, the company offers tools, code sample and technical support via Stratis Academy. This initiative seeks to initiate C#developers from all over the world into this novel technology, by offering incentives and opportunities to compete and showcase their abilities in hackathons and other activities.

We invite you to stop by booth #321 at the Expo for a demonstration of the many capabilities of the Stratis Platform, and the opportunity to evaluate your project together with Stratis experts led by its CEO and Founder Chris Trew.
