Gridcoin Updated Details+Update

  • What is Gridcoin?

    • Gridcoin (Ticker: GRC) is a decentralized, open source math-based digital asset (cryptocurrency). It performs transactions peer-to-peer cryptographically without the need for a central issuing authority.
    • Gridcoin was the first block chain protocol that delivered a working algorithm that equally rewards and cryptographically proves solving BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) hosted work, which can be virtually any kind of distributed computing process (GPU/CPU/Sensor/Etc).
    • BOINC is an open-source volunteer oriented computing grid that combines the processing power of all individual users for the purposes of scientific research. It's free, and harnesses the unused clock cycles from processors and graphics cards to attempt to cure cancer/aids/ebola/malaria, map the milkyway, crack enigma codes, etc. .
    • Gridcoin rewards BOINC computation using the Distributed Proof of Research (DPOR) reward mechanism, which is a combination of Proof of BOINC (POB) and Proof of Stake (POSv2).
    • Proof of Work (POW) consensus mechanisms are not utilised by the Gridcoin network, making the Gridcoin cryptocurrency network far more energy efficient than any existing POW cryptocurrencies.

    Parameters
Algorithm: Distributed Proof-of-Research, Reward based on Research contribution to BOINC secured via Proof-of-Stake
    Block time: 90 Seconds
0% pre-mine: Longest distribution schedule for any Proof-of-Stake based coin with an 18 month initial distribution based on Gridcoin Classic
    Initial Supply: 340,569,880 http://wiki.gridcoin.us/Proof-of-Research_Genesis_...
Inflation: Inflation approximately 6.5% per annum after November 2015, 1.5% interest from Proof-of-Stake, target of 18.25 million coins per year from Distributed Proof-of-Research
For more info see Gridcoin Research Reward Calculation http://wiki.gridcoin.us/Proof-of-Research#Proof-of...

    Solo-Crunching

    Advantages

Your individual user statistics are tracked across multiple BOINC and Gridcoin statistics websites.
By regularly staking, you're processing broadcast transactions and helping secure the Gridcoin network.
Staking with the windows client helps maintain an accurate Neural Network of BOINC statistics.
You can vote using your balance and DPOR weight within the client. You lose this ability when pool crunching.

    Disadvantages

Since Distributed Proof of Research (DPOR - BOINC reward mechanism) is rewarded on top of the Proof of Stake (POSv2) cryptocurrency reward mechanism, an initial balance of Gridcoin is required in order to continuously stake blocks. An desired increased probability/frequency of staking requires an increased gridcoin balance.

    Pool Crunching

    Advantages

No need to stake or acquire an initial balance of Gridcoin in order to receive DPOR (BOINC rewards).
Users with a low gridcoin balance in their wallet will experience faster DPOR payouts through the pool than through solo-staking. You can switch to solo-staking once you've built up a sufficient balance to stake with at the frequency you desire.

    Disadvantages

Your DPOR earnings may be subject to additional fees via a 3rd party Gridcoin pool.
Using a pool is a more centralized method of acquiring your owed BOINC rewards; only one Gridcoin client will be staking (the pool's client) rather than every individual pool user running a Gridcoin client.
You cannot use your DPOR weight to vote on polls within the Gridcoin client.
Your individual BOINC statistics will likely only be reported on the pool website, all other BOINC/Gridcoin stat sites will report stats only for the pool's BOINC account.

Earn Gridcoin through Proof of Stake

    Interest is 1.5% APR
    Investor mode
    Advantages

By staking blocks, you're processing broadcast transactions and helping secure the Gridcoin network.
Staking with the windows client helps maintain an accurate Neural Network of BOINC statistics for the Gridcoin network.
You can vote using your balance to vote on important matters within the Gridcoin client.

    Disadvantages

You'll earn less Gridcoin than those participating in DPOR, since you'll only earn interest on your Gridcoin balance.

    GRIDCOIN'S FEATURES

Gridcoin's feature set is constantly evolving and improving, thanks to dedicated developers, a thorough testing team and a great community; below is a brief list of gridcoin's current features.

    PROOF-OF-STAKE

Gridcoin Research utilises proof of stake (POS) as its primary distributed consensus mechanism.
In Proof-of-Stake, currency is not mined, but rather minted as yearly compound interest.
As a mint mechanism Proof-of-Stake uses the stake of the holder itself. The larger a user's stake in gridcoin, the higher the probability that the user will mint a block.
    Read more about POS

    PROOF-OF-BOINC

When a researcher registers for individual BOINC projects, a cross project ID (CPID) is generated by BOINC and used by Proof-Of-BOINC to securely track BOINC contributions made by GRC Researchers.
    Read more about POB

    DISTRIBUTED-PROOF-OF-RESEARCH

Proof of stake (POS) and Proof of BOINC (POB) are tied together by Distributed Proof of Research (DPOR).
Thanks to DPOR, Gridcoin no longer relies on a centralized credit checking system (netsoft); instead the client queries BOINC project servers directly & the network agrees on a superblock once per 24 hours to track all BOINC stats and register new users.
    Read more about DPOR

    Decentralized Voting

The Gridcoin client has inbuilt decentralized voting & plans to expand on blockchain based voting systems.

Detailed guide to the voting system.

    BOINC WHITELIST

Gridcoin has implemented a BOINC project whitelist to prevent shenanigans and improve Gridcoin's network security.

The Gridcoin community is looking into creating a thorough whitelisting process; Stay tuned for more info!
    Read more about the whitelist.

    HELP ADVANCE SCIENCE

With Gridcoin, not only will you be rewarded with GRC - you'll be aiding important research such as attempting to solve cancer/aids/ebola/malaria, mapping the milkyway, folding protiens, finding prime numbers, etc.
Even just by using Gridcoin as a currency, you'll be helping establish the Gridcoin economy - ensuring the thousands of BOINC contributors are able to cover electricity costs.
Several projects have published publications thanks to the computing resources donated by BOINC.

  • Gridcoin GPU mining (3): Blast From The Past

I have built a new machine recently, specifically for BOINC computations and mining Gridcoin. Like my other machine, this one is also watercooled, since it's placed in my living room and is running 24/7:

    Classical elegance of watercooling :)

Subwoofer, EK-CoolStream XE 480 radiator and Lian Li PC-A10B case

Full specs:- CPU Intel Core i7-990X - ASUS Rampage III Extreme X58 S1366- Corsair XMS3 Dominator GT 12GB DDR3 - 2 x Gigabyte R9 280X (rebranded HD7970)I know what you're probably thinking: that's not quite the best hardware, hardly worth spending so much on it - newer GPUs would certainly yield higher hash rates. And for repetitive Proof-of-Work algorithms, you would probably be right. But while Proof-of-Work hashing is usually dealing with integer numbers, computational science is more complex and is usually dealing with decimal numbers - so called floating point operations. The speed of floating-point operations, commonly measured in FLOPS (FLoating-point Operations Per Second), is a very important characteristic of a computer system, especially for applications that involve intensive mathematical calculations. For example, 8 teraflops (TFLOPS) is equivalent to 8x10^12 or 8000000000000 (eight trillions) floating operations per seconds (performance commonly seen in today's GPUs). Performance of today's supercomputers is commonly measured in petaflops (PFLOPS or 10^15 floating operations per second). Current performance of the BOINC network is (roughly) estimated at 175 petaflops. Fastest supercomputer in the world is currently Sunway TaihuLight, with peak performance of 125 petaflops.

    Floating Point Operations - FP32 vs FP64

When analyzing the performance of your GPU in computational science, it's very important to know that there are two levels of floating point precision: single (usually abbreviated as FP32, for using 32 bits) and double (FP64, using 64 bits). Double precision is well... more precise. Without going into too much details, consider a straightforward example:The single precision value of Pi is 3.1415927 (7 decimal places)The double precision value of Pi is 3.1415926535897930 (16 decimal places)There are BOINC projects where 7 decimal places just aren't enough for accurate computations. For example, the MilkyWay@home project, which is creating a highly accurate three dimensional model of the Milky Way galaxy, is using a lot of exponential functions in its math and all tiny errors produced by constant rounding to 7 decimal places get exponentiated by an exponential function too, delivering results which are simply not accurate enough in the end. Consequently, if you want to compute for MilkyWay@home, double precision is mandatory. And that's where the things get tricky, because newer GPUs have actually very low FP64 performance. Since FP32 is more than adequate for gaming, AMD and Nvidia have in their wisdom decided that FP64 is for "professionals" only, so you are welcome to buy their professional graphic cards which cost much more than regular, consumer cards.

    HD7970 Tahiti

But double precision wasn't always for professionals only. Back in early 2012. when AMD released their HD7000 consumer series, they were generous enough to equip their flagship GPU, HD7970 Tahiti, with 1.1 TFLOPS of FP64 performance, at a price of $549. In February 2013. Nvidia released their GeForce GTX Titan with 1.5 TFLOPS of FP64 performance at a price of $999 and suddenly high-end double precision computing became quite expensive. AMD followed suit and halved FP64 performance on their next line of consumer cards (Rx 300 series), relegating such niceties to expensive professional market. Good times were over (and they didn't last long).

HD7970 Tahiti - most affordable FP64 power ever! Released in early 2012. and delivering 1.1 TFLOPS of FP64 performance at a price of $549 (you can find them today for $150 at eBay). In comparison, GeForce GTX1080, one of the most powerful consumer graphic cards today, can achieve only 0.28 TFLOPS in FP64 (but 8.8 TFLOPS in FP32).

Not surprisingly, due to its high FP64 output, HD7970 is still an admirable BOINC performer today, very well suited for BOINC projects which require double precision computations (such as MilkyWay@home). My new machine is currently holding the third place at MilkyWay top host list which is populated almost exclusively by Tahiti cards (HD7970 is also known as R9 280X when AMD simply rebranded it in October 2013). And of course, anything that yields high performance in BOINC is also very suitable for mining Gridcoin (more BOINC work=more Gridcoins, to put it simply).

    Top five hosts in MilkyWay@home

How much FP64 have you got?

Interested in doing some computations for science? You can check FP32/FP64 GFLOPS for your graphic card on the following links:http://www.geeks3d.com/20140305/amd-radeon-and-nvidia-geforce-fp32-fp64-gflops-table-computing

(clear and instructive, but newer cards are not listed)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units

(a bit harder to navigate, but ALL Nvidia GPUs are listed - look under Processing Power DP column) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

(same remark, but for AMD/ATI) Don't worry if your GPU is weak at FP64. There are plenty of BOINC projects which use FP32 or single precision. We'll be talking about one such (very popular) project in my next article about Gridcoin GPU mining

  • Gridcoin Community Hangout episode guide!

    GRC Hangout episode guide

    Brief Intro

The Gridcoin (GRC) Community Hangouts are scheduled mumble meetings, we folow a similar model to the BeyondBitcoin hangouts in that anyone can submit a relevant topic to disuss & order of talking priority is determined via post vote value (desending order).

@OfficialFuzzy (Fuzzy) from the BeyondBitcoin community reached out to the Gridcoin community earlier this year via his 'community allstar outreach' campaign, ever since then we've been consistently creating content and utilizing the BeyondBitcoin mumble server.

Shout out to @peppernrino for doing audio editing work & to all the regular attendees!

BTW, just a heads up - you can use your favorite Podcasting application to listen to the 'Gridcoin Community Hangouts', as our SoundCloud RSS feed was submitted to a significant quantity of podcasting directories.

    TL;DR: What's Gridcoin?

Gridcoin is a cryptocurrency which securely rewards BOINC computation (Such as attempting to solve cancer/aids/ebola/malaria, mapping the Milkyway, searching for extraterrestrial life, protien folding, etc ) on top of Proof of Stake.

Unlike Golem, you do not pay for volunteers/workers to crunch BOINC work units, the Gridcoin network distributes rewards to volunteers on the behalf of whitelisted BOINC projects.

  • Gridcoin roadmap: 2017-2019 !

    by erkan

The main dev of Gridcoin has set up an initial roadmap for Gridcoin (2017-2019).

Everybody is invited to add more details or more items!

    See announcement + timeline (2013-2019)

Let's focus on the near-term events first:

    2017 June-July:

    • more devs will come
    • Electrum client for Android & iPhone
    • The linux client will get same features as the Windows version (e.g. Voting UI, Foundation UI, Neural Network UI)
    • Releasing foundation funds (the community votes on where funds can be spent, see current polls) will require multiple signers

    October - December

    • SourceSafe Testnet Branch and QA process goes live. Ensure the Testnet branch is a separate codebase. All release candidates are tested through QA before merge into Prod.
    • Store Document attachments in chain (expense reimbursements, document storage leases).

    2018

    • Disaster recovery: Ensure we have back up Web Developer and WebHost and SSL keys are shared, Code Config Manager, Document Repository/Deployment repository backup cross trained and ready to step in to relieve centralization of GRC.
    • Port best of breed security and bitcoin missing features or updates into Gridcoin.
    • Gridcoin sleek cosmetic UI finished (ability to control boinc, one click setup, auto-detect boinc settings, ease of use cosmetic features for any user level, iPhone style unified UI, improved error detection, improved assumption tree), foolproof usage, no prior domain knowledge required to use GRC.
    • smart contracts
    • E-commerce gateway instructions released, payments via GRC -> USD via debit card are now supported. Those using GRC debit cards may purchase items and the back office will transfer GRC->BTC->USD to execute payment. The E-commerce gateway is a REST snap in allowing payments in GRC to be processed as a BTC reimbursement in real time.
    • SQL Integration (Replicate Contract Data to Volunteer SQL Servers, allow queries from query analyzer within the Coin).

    2019

    • REST Integration with DAO: Allow owner of DAO to store on chain assets, allow integration for deposit/withdraw from DAO within GRC RPC through RESTful URLs.

    Gridcoin Community Hangout #022 - 21th Jan 2017

    by Cm-Steem

    Gridcoin Community Hangout #022

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free.

Another massive thanks to @peppernrino for editing the hangout recordings! Follow him on Steem! :D

    What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

    More info: https://steemit.com/beyondbitc...

Where can I listen to past hangouts?

    YouTube

    MixCloud

    https://cryptocointalk.com/top...

    https://soundcloud.com/gridcoi...

    Past episode details

021 RSVP & Topic suggestion thread

Why are we holding these hangouts?

    • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
    • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
    • To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities.

How long will the hangout last?

If there are not many topics suggested then hangouts won't last longer than an hour, on the other hand if there are many topic suggested then the hangout may last 2-3 hours!

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steem post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest voted suggestions.

    Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/Cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

Proposed time for Gridcoin Hangout #021:

    9PM GMT 21th Jan 2017.

Compare 9PM GMT to your time zone!.

How to join the Gridcoin hangout

Step 1: Download Mumble. [Windows Client, Android Client]

    Step 2:

Step 3: Configure Mumble & join the server!

Label: BeyondBitcoin - Gridcoin Address: mumble.beyondbitcoinshow.com Port: 64738 Username: Enter your username Password: w0rldCh@NG3rsUN!t3

Step 4: Join the Gridcoin channel!

Step 5: Configure your audio wizard & setup Push-To-Talk. Join 10-15 mins before the hangout starts to test your audio configuration.

I hope you decide to attend the hangout - everyone is welcome to join, especially those who suggest topics of discussion in this thread.

    Best regards, CM.

  • Brainstorming BOINC projects #004

     by Cm-steem

    BOINC and Gridcoin

    What is BOINC?

BOINC is an open-source volunteer oriented distributed computing grid. It's free, and harnesses the unused clock cycles from processors and graphics cards to attempt to cure cancer/aids/ebola/malaria, map the milkyway, fold proteins, search for extraterrestrial life, etc.

Currently, there are approx 580,000 active BOINC users & more then 4 million registered accounts. There's serious computing power being untapped at the moment.

What are some examples of existing BOINC projects?

    • World Community Grid : Attempting to solve Cancer, Ebola, Malaria, Zika, etc.
    • SETI@Home : Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI).
    • GPUGRID: Full-atom molecular simulations of proteins
    • Milkyway@home : Creation of a 3d map of the milkyway galaxy using data gathered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This project enables research in both astroinformatics and computer science.

    Examples of more whitelisted projects.

    How does Gridcoin benefit BOINC?

The Gridcoin network rewards BOINC volunteers on behalf of the whitelisted BOINC projects. As a result, more computation is pointed at their projects without costing the BOINC project admins a penny.

By comparison, a BOINC project admin would have to fork out serious cash to get an equal level of computing power out of Maidsafe/Golem/etc.

Who can make a BOINC project?

Anyone can create a BOINC project, there's no centralised authority that you are required to consult before creating a BOINC project.

How can I make a BOINC project?

IMO, the easiest method of creating a BOINC project is to use the 'BOINC Server Docker' repo! It takes the majority of manual configuration out of the picture allowing you to focus on customization & the creation of your application/work units.

The developer "Marius Millea" (Cosmology@Home dev) is very active, give him a shout if you run into issues w/ the docker container.

    Outdated guides

There are three types of BOINC projects!

    Volunteer/non-profit

    Commercial/For-Profit

    • Companies: Use BOINC for desktop Grid computing. Create a commercial BOINC project, charge customer to process their data and distribute x###/strong#< to BOINC crunchers & y###/strong#< to project admins/shareholders.

    BOINC DAC (Theoretical)

A "BOINC deentralized autonomous company" is a theoretical extension on the 'Commercial/For-Profit' project type.

Further research&development is required to decentralize the BOINC web server stack.

Existing research (mostly storage decentralization, not 100% decentralized)

    BOINC vs Cloud computing platforms

    Research papers

    TL;DR: (Note - 7 year old statistics!)

    • In the best-case scenario, hosts register at a rate of 124 cloud nodes per day.
    • The ratio of volunteer nodes needed to achieve the compute power of a small EC2 instance is about 2.83 active volunteer hosts to 1.
    • Effectively, with a commercial BOINC project, there exists the opportunity to create a cloud computing service without actually owning/providing the computing capabilities yourself. Imagine creating Azure at a fraction of the cost..

Got an idea for a BOINC project?

Do you have an idea for a potential BOINC project, or do you have questions about either BOINC or Gridcoin? Reply below! You don't need to have the skills to implement the project, we want to hear all ideas! :)

I'll repost your ideas each month afterwards to immortalize the idea until it is created! ;D

    Best regards, CM.

Why is this thread being reposted?

Due to complexities in Steemit's reward mechanism, there is a 30 day maximum window for replying to threads. After 30 days have passed, the thread is effectively archived/dead.

In order to continuously brainstorm possible BOINC projects this thread will be reposted every 30 days.

  • GridcoinStats updated with project news, historical graphs, more accurate voting and more.

    By, Sc-Steemit -https://steemit.com/gridcoinst...

Another update of GridcoinStats has been made today.

    Among other things here are the highlights;

    Projects:

    • Overview Page now has projects news. Displaying last 10 for all projects.
    • Overview Page also has Available and In Progress WUs since a while back.
    • Projects details page has last 10 news for the specific project
    • Projects details page also has nice historic graphs for WUs and Users distribution.

    Voting:

    • Voting page now handles multiple voting better. A voting for 3 alternatives divides the share by 3 and adds the share to each choice. This will make the ending result on the right more accurate.

    CPIDs + Mag:

    • CPID details page now has a nice historic graph for the users Magnitude.
    • Page rendering of CPIDs with many staked blocks are now much quicker.

    Faucet:

    • There has been some issues with the Faucet rejecting claims, this has now been fixed since a few days again.

Hope you enjoy this update. Visit us at GridcoinStats.eu.

  • Gridcoin has been integrated into CoinPayments.Net ! Accept Gridcoin on your website today

    By, Sc-Steemit:https://steemit.com/gridcoin/@...

Gridcoin has been integrated into CoinPayments.Net!

You can now accept Gridcoin on your website via the following 22 website plugins:

This is an excellent development for Gridcoin & will allow for BOINC projects to easily accept Gridcoin for payment/donations in the future! Here's to a prosperous 2017! Huzzah!

  • Gridcoin's customised Bitshares Web Wallet (DEX)!

    By, Sc-Steemit:https://steemit.com/gridcoin/@...

The Gridcoin community has begun customizing the Bitshares web wallet, prioritizing OPEN.GRC as a featured asset & main trading pair against many important BTS assets!

It only took a day of editing (and a day of messing with the build environment) to get this far. It's not a live wallet for the public, but still in development & open-source for anyone to run locally.

I might create a guide for setting up a similar build environment using Windows and Virtualbox if anyone's interested?

I hope to add in new drop-down menus to the right of 'Deposit/Withdraw', linking to the other web wallets (OpenLedger, FreedomLedger, BTSABC, etc) and to BOINC/BTS/Gridcoin community links. The *.JSX is a tad confusing though..

Some of the screenshots still show Open.BTC being used as the trading pair, this has been changed.

    Thoughts?
